I hate to break it to you... but the summer holidays are about to start. On one hand, morning travel gets a lot easier. On the other, if you haven't already made your holiday plans, it make feel too late. But it's not too late - promise. The UK is packed with incredible places that don’t always make the ‘must-visit’ lists—and they’re often much easier to enjoy at this time of year. If you’re still wondering where to head, here are five of my favourites… 🏖️ NorthumberlandIf you love dramatic castles, endless beaches and quiet coastal roads, Northumberland is hard to beat. Don’t miss:
(It's also often a lot cooler than the south of England...) 🌄 Mid WalesPeople often drive through Mid Wales on the way to Snowdonia… but they’re missing a trick. Central Wales is full of woods, lakes and great scenery without the huge crowds. Don’t miss:
🏴 The Scottish BordersEveryone heads towards Glencoe, the NC500 or Skye, but the Borders deserve far more attention. Enjoy rolling countryside, fascinating history and roads that are made for motorhome touring. Don’t miss:
🌿 The Forest of Dean & Wye ValleyIf you enjoy walking, cycling or simply relaxing in nature, this is a fantastic destination. It’s also surprisingly easy to reach from much of England. Don’t miss:
⛰️ The Peak DistrictThe Peak District is popular (for good reason!)—but it’s a huge National Park, so it’s fairly easy to find quieter spots away from the busiest villages. Don’t miss:
Where are you heading this summer? Hit reply and let me know—I always love hearing what adventures everyone has planned. Safe travels,
P.S: If you'd like to make summer touring even easier, I'm running a free workshop at the end of July - the Wild Parking and Off-Grid Workshop. I'll share how to find places to stay off-grid without breaking any laws or upsetting the locals, how to choose the best spots, stay safe and practical tips for staying off-grid for days or even weeks at a time. It's FREE to join, but spaces for the live call are limited, so reserve yours here |
UK's #1 Motorhome Travel Blog. In 2018, I quit my job as an air traffic controller to tour the UK and Europe by motorhome. I share weekly tips, itinerary ideas and mistakes to avoid- all to help motorhome and campervan owners make the most of their time on the road. See you out there! More resources available at Wandering-Bird.com and you can follow the adventures on Youtube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok @wanderingbird.adventures
Hands up if your travel photos basically consist of: your motorhome, your dinner, and the same mountain from 14 slightly different angles? (No shame here - I do the same, plus many many photos of my dog!) I’ve always loved capturing our adventures, but it wasn’t until I started travelling solo that I realised how much you can improve your photos — whether you’re using a drone, a phone or a “proper” camera. So today I wanted to share a few easy ways to get better road trip photos… without...
One of the most common questions I get about France is "where are your favourite places"? And it's TOUGH. There are so many incredible places around France to enjoy. Before we start, I just wanted to acknowledge the awful wildfires happening in parts of France and elsewhere in southern Europe. My thoughts are with everyone affected, especially the local communities and emergency services working so hard. The places I'm sharing below aren't intended as "go there now" recommendations -...
We've all been there. You've packed up your camper, shoved things into cupboards or piled it all on the bed in a last-minute rush... Only to set off and be serenaded by a symphony of noises. Bangs Clunks Clink clink clinks The drawer has slid open. The fridge has emptied it's contents Oh- and you forgot to take the shelf out of the oven. Again All in all, you can barely hear yourself think, (and the poor dog is looking at you like you've done it on purpose to upset him!) Over the years, I...
